Ms. Mary Ann Murphy
Mary Ann Murphy has served as the principal of ICS since 1987. She has been engaged in the ministry of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles since 1976, working predominantly with the Latino community. Mary Ann graduated from Holy Names University and received her Master’s degree in Education from Mt. St. Mary’s. She taught for 11 years prior to her nearly 30 years as principal. Mary Ann is active in the WCEA/WASC accreditation process and training for the elementary schools in the archdiocese.
Mrs. Alexandra La Serna
Mrs. La Serna has served as secretary at ICS for ten years, after 18 years of service in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Her sons attended ICS, and in 1987 she was here to set up the luncheon tables for one very special guest, His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
Ms. Martha Ruiz
Ms. Ruiz has been personally involved in Catholic school environments since her own pre-school experience. She brings over 10 years experience in pre-school instruction and supervision to ICS. Previously she served as Teacher in the Pre-school Program at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal.
Ms. Judy Gonzalez
Pre-School Teacher and Daycare
Ms. Judy Gonzalez has been affiliated with ICS for over 25 years. Her three children graduated from ICS and are now successful adults. Ms. Judy began working at the school in the after-school program. For a number of years she was the teacher aide in Grade 2. When ICS opened its pre-school program in March 2010, Ms. Judy became the co-teacher for our littlest students.
Ms. Gloria Esqueda
Transitional Kindergarten Teacher
Gloria Esqueda graduated from Cal State Northridge in 2015 with her bachelors in Child and Adolescent Development. She is currently attending Mount Saint Mary’s for her Masters in Education and her teaching credential. This is her second year teaching TK but she has been working with young children for over 10 years.

Ms. Carrie Rodriguez
Carrie Rodriguez is an Alum from Immaculate Conception School class of 2003. She graduated from Saint Monica Catholic High School and continued her higher education at Cal State Northridge where she received her Bachelors in Child and Adolescent development in 2014. She is currently pursuing her teaching credential with a Masters in Education at Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Ms. Beatriz Garcia
Ms. Georgia Rodriguez
1st Grade Teacher
Georgia Rodriguez is a graduate of ICS. Her education was supported by the Catholic Education Foundation through elementary and high school. She completed her undergraduate studies and credential at California State University at Northridge in 2007. She lives in the community and brings an important perspective to our faculty.
Mrs. Reina Cueva
1st Grade Aide (a.m.) and Daycare Director
Sra. Cueva has worked at Immaculate Conception School for many years. She runs the after-school care program in the afternoons and works as a teacher aide each morning in Grade 1. Mrs. Cueva is the proud mother of two young adult sons, Walter and William, both graduates of ICS.
Ms. Elizabeth Charles
2nd Grade Teacher
Elizabeth Charles came to Immaculate Conception through the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), a Catholic service-teaching program. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Elizabeth is working towards her masters in Education from Notre Dame through the ACE program. She is looking forward to a wonderful second year with the second grade and is grateful for the ICS community.
Mrs. Betsy Lopez
2nd Grade Aide, Sports Coordinator, and Marketing and Development Assistant
Mrs. Lopez has been with ICS as the 2nd Grade Aide for four years. Beginning this year she is also the school Sports’ Coordinator and Development Assistant, working closely with our donors and ICS Board of Advisors. All of Betsy’s children have attended ICS and she says she loves working and spending time at such a family oriented school and organization.
Mrs. Patricia Bachemin
3rd Grade Teacher
Patricia Bachemin is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach and has taught at Immaculate Conception since 1996. She grew up in the parish, and is familiar with the challenges of the community. Mrs. Bachemin works miracles with her students, many of whom enter school with no pre-school and speaking minimal English. By the year’s end, they are reading and writing in English.
Ms. Michelle Simon
4th Grade Teacher
Michelle Simon is an Immaculate Conception School Alum from the class of 2008. She went on to attend Bishop-Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School, and later graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 2017. Ms. Simon has a degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in History along with her California Teaching Credential. “I am excited to be a part of our wonderful ICS community and can’t wait for what this year has for us! I am blessed to be back at ICS as the fourth grade teacher! I have been a part of the ICS community for a really long time and I can say I’m extremely proud of my ICS roots.”
Ms. Belinda Perez-Ortiz
5th Grade Teacher
Belinda Ortiz comes from a family of educators and a love for teaching. Belinda earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Houston with Generalist and Special Education teaching credentials. In 2005 she began working in schools in Texas and in 2015 moved to California. This is her second year as a fifth grade teacher at Immaculate Conception and she looks forward to many more.
Mr. Bo Applegate
6th Grade Teacher / Language Arts for 6-8 Grades
Bo Applegate began his career in education in 2002 after receiving a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside. After working in private education for several years, Bo returned to college and earned his M.A. in Education from University of Phoenix in 2006. He taught both adult secondary education in the city of El Monte and as a substitute teacher for Holy Name of Mary School. In the fall of 2017, Mr. Applegate became part of the teaching staff at Immaculate Conception School. When not working, Bo enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Mr. Eddie Quintana
8th Grade Teacher / Social Studies for 6-8 Grades
Eddie Quintana graduated from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a B.A. in Film Production. Since 2004, he has taught students to perform improv comedy, and he has directed improv shows throughout the U.S. and Canada. He joined the faculty of ICS in 2017.
Ms. Heather Murphy-Garcia
Vice Principal, Curriculum Director, and 8th Grade Teacher / Science for 6-8 Grades
Heather Murphy-Garcia first taught at ICS in 2000 before pursuing graduate studies in urban planning at UCLA. Since returning to ICS she has acquired an additional Master’s degree in education and a California credential at Loyola Marymount University. In the fall of 2008 she began her third Master’s in instructional leadership at Mt. St. Mary’s.
Ms. Nadine Vasquez
Director of Marketing and Development
Nadine Vasquez is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University with her masters and credentials in education and is also now an adjunct professor at Mount St. Mary’s University. In addition, she is currently attending LMU toward earning a second master’s in Catholic School Administration. Ms. Vasquez is active in ICS special events, marketing, development and her experience and talents include 10 years as a stand-up bass player.
Mr. Nestor Diaz
Physical Education Teacher and Athletic Director
Mr. Diaz has been the P.E. teacher and team coach for ten years. He has coached boys and girls basketball and soccer as well as girls volleyball. Coach Diaz is a physician from Ecuador. His two younger children are both graduates of ICS.
Sra. Guadalupe Zavala
Lunch Program and Daycare Aide
Sra. Zavala directs the Federal School Lunch Program at ICS. She arrives bright and early each day to prepare breakfast for the students and then gets lunch ready, too! After school she assists the daycare program. Mrs. Zavala has three daughters who graduated from ICS.
