Our History
Immaculate Conception Parish has a long and rich history. Located in the center of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ traditional base, this corridor along 9th Street included the offices of the archdiocese, The Tidings, Catholic Charities and Cotter’s, the famous church supply store. Many of the leaders of the church were associated with the parish over the years, including Archbishop Cantwell, Cardinals McIntyre, Manning and Mahony, and visitors have included the Pope and Mother Teresa. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opened the school and the first graduating class was in 1919. In its early days the school had four classrooms with two grade levels per classroom. Since 1984 the school has been staffed by a dedicated group of lay teachers. On September 16, 1987, the students and faculty of Immaculate Conception had the distinct privilege of welcoming His Holiness Pope John Paul II and Mrs. Nancy Reagan. Both visitors met with a selected group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Later they spoke to the entire school community which was assembled outside. This was a historical and memorable day for all present and has become an important part of the school’s identity.
In 2009, the school opened a state-licensed pre-school to serve our youngest learners. In 2016, the four-year olds were given a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom, allowing pre-school to open its doors to 2 and 3 year olds.
The commitment to excellence and academic advancement is profound. Nearly 100-percent of ICS students advance to high school on scholarship, and tracking proves over 90 percent will matriculate to colleges and universities. ICS students have attended some of the finest institutions in the country, including UCLA, USC, Brown, UC Berkeley, and LMU.
In 2019 Immaculate Conception School celebrated 100 years of Excellence in Education. ICS continues to boldly embrace new and exciting goals in its second century.
